A lot of free software is available on the net, some of it good. Increasingly, though, the barriers to entry are dropping, and there's a remarkable amount of really bad software out there. From time to time I investigate some new category of software. In the past, like most people, I chose what I thought the best (or gave up if I couldn't find anything good enough). That's a waste of the time I spent, though, so I'm now keeping a record of what I have investigated and what I thought of it.
Another advantage of publishing these opinions is that they provide a sanity check: in alarmingly many cases, the worst thing about the software is the documentation, and it's very likely that I'll miss some important feature. Having the opinions on the web gives people a chance to correct my assumptions.
